College Q&A! Your Questions Answered!!
Q: How did you know that NC State was the school for you?
A: I knew I wanted to go into Fashion Management in a public school in state and NC State’s College of Textiles is the best public textiles program in the country, so that was my main decider. The other in state public schools that offer a similar program are Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, and UNC Greensboro. Out of those, I only applied to State and App because I knew my chances of getting into App were high and I would have been perfectly happy going there instead.
Q: Do you think the Textiles program at NC State challenges you?
A: As much as I want it to. At this point, I am just ready to earn a degree and be done with school so I am not really looking for it to challenge me. I want to have a career in this field, so I enjoy most of the work. While some of it is a little more difficult, I have mostly just enjoyed our lessons. Q: What do you love most about NC State?
A: Definitely my program. The teachers and opportunities within it are amazing and I trust that my degree from NC State will land me a job- it’s the number one reason why I chose NC State. As far as events on campus and things like that, game days are definitely my favorite days. I love how the entire school comes together to show their spirit and cheer on the pack.
Q: Recommendations for packing clothing?
A: I have a whole post on this! 5 Tips for Downsizing your Closet for College I wrote this before college, but I will be doing an updated version on my YouTube channel!
Q: What is your favorite place on campus?
For studying, my favorite place is up by myself in the DH Hill library book stacks. When it comes to food, the atrium is my favorite food court because they have Chick-Fil-A and SmoothieU. Other than that, I do not really have a favorite place to hang out. Honestly, I spent a lot of time in my dorm last year- probably way more than I should have.
Q: What was your favorite class during your freshman year?
A: Fashion Textile Management: Trends in the Industry. I talked a lot about what we did in this class in this post Week in the Life of a Fashion Student | NC State University
Q: What was your least favorite class during your freshman year?
Definitely Middle Eastern History. For whatever reason, I was under the impression that I needed a history class when I did not. The only one available was Middle Eastern History, so I just chose it and went with it. The class was heavily dependent on you reading a long and difficult textbook, which is not my strong suit. I ended with a C- in the class- my worst grade yet and I hope ever. Definitely make sure you know what classes you need and take ones that are actually interesting to you.
Q: How long is the drive from your house to your campus?
A: My hometown is about three and a half hours away. The apartment that I will be living in this year is just a few minutes from the main campus and it is located on NC State’s Centennial campus, where the College of Textiles is.
Q: Is there anything you are going to try to do differently your sophomore year that you didn’t do your freshman year?
A: I definitely want to try to put myself out there and experience more of college.
Q: What is your living situation this year and how do you plan on decorating it?
A: I will be living in NC State’s Wolf Ridge apartments on Centennial Campus. I have decided to continue to live through the university because it is easier for me financially since my financial aid covers it. I know there is some way to take that money and put it towards off-campus apartments, but I am not ready to deal with that along with a year lease rather than a 9-month contract. I have changed the design of my room up a lot, but I want it to be fashionable and fabulous. I will have an apartment decor haul up on my YouTube channel soon and will be doing an Apartment tour!
Q: What is your biggest regret of freshman year?
A: This is such a specific moment, but I feel like it was the beginning of me setting myself apart from my roommate and her friends. The first week of school, my roommate and a bunch of her friends went and ate in the dining hall and invited me to go. I ate with them, but after they were going to a Frat party and I declined their invitation. I was not really one to go out in high school and coming into college all I ever heard was how dangerous Frat parties can be. How it is not safe to go with people you do not know and how high of a chance there is that girls will be drugged. At that time, I was not comfortable going out with people I had just met. While that is perfectly fine, from my perspective, the group bonded that night and I was instantly secluded. I am not saying you need to put yourself in a dangerous situation or do things you are not comfortable with, but give college life a chance. Accept people’s invitations and be open to new opportunities. If you do not like it, you can leave at any time and do not have to go back. Of course, BE SAFE! Luckily, I have not heard any stories of girls ending up in dangerous situations at parties at NC State, but there is always a chance of that happening so you need to stay aware.
Q: How much does your ACT score actually impact college?
I think that your essays and the volunteer experience, hobbies, and leadership experience you bring to the table are the most important part of your college application, not the numbers. However, doing well on your ACT can pay off in the long run. I scored a 33 on my English section, so I got to skip Freshman English. There is a chart on NC State’s website showing what you need to score on a subject to skip it as well as what AP scores will be rewarded with credit.
Q: Do you recommend staying on or off campus?
Definitely on campus, and it is required as a Freshman at NC State. I feel like living on campus not only helps put you in the community of the school, but it is a lot safer because, at least at NC State, only those with a key card can even enter the lobby of a residence hall. I am nervous about living on Centennial Campus this year because I have to take the bus to get to and from Centennial and Main, and I do not want this to seclude me even more. I feel like this may make it more difficult to hang out with anyone I may meet.
Q: What were your numbers in high school?
I was 19th out of 250 in my class, my ACT score average was 29, and my weighted GPA was 4.8533. I do not think that these numbers are too terribly important because they say nothing about who I really am, but however you take them, there they are.
Q: Why did you choose State over other colleges?
They have the best textile program. I know I have said it a million times, but my program really is why I chose State and why I think anyone should choose their school. In the end, you are going to get an education and a degree that will secure your future, you want it to be a good one.
Q: How is the food at college?
It’s not that bad, but like anything else, you will get tired of it. NC State has three dining halls that serve school lunch-type meals, two food courts on the main campus, and one food court on the Centennial campus. Oh, and endless Port City Java coffee shops scattered across all campuses. One food court is in Talley Student Union and it has Jason’s Deli, a burrito place called Los Lobos, a pizza place, Starbucks, and Tuffy’s, which has things like chicken tenders, grilled cheese, and cheeseburgers. The atrium on the main campus has SmoothieU, Chick-Fil-A, a wrap place, a Chinese place, and a pizza/Italian place.
Q: What other schools did you apply to?
A: The only other school I applied to was Appalachian State University. It’s pretty close to my hometown, so a lot of people from my high school go there. Their fashion program includes both design and merchandising, so I would have done both there.
