Today was the first day of formal recruitment and we got the chance to meet with all ten of the sorority chapters here at NC State University. We all met at the bus stops at three and rode to where we met all the chapters.
When we walked in we had to find out name tags and then find our Recruitment Leaders to sit with our group until we would begin to meet with the sorority sisters at 4:45. Just so you know, we met with our Recruitment Groups the night before and went over a little more about the rush process and were given our drawstring bags, recruitment tee, water bottle, sticker, and pen! Anyways, we sat with our groups and prepared to begin visiting the chapters by writing our names on ten different slips of paper so we could hand one to every chapter.
We had to wait for quite a while to begin, but when we finally did, we paired with three other groups to enter each chapters room. We had to leave our bags and phones outside the room with our Recruitment Leaders while visiting with the chapters so we would not be distracted. As we entered, the chapter would sing their songs to welcome us and we would be paired with one individual sister. She would introduce herself and ask a few basic questions. After we had chatted for a while, another sister would come up and take her place. Some chapters would have up to four different girls speak to us while others just left it with one. We would have about fifteen minutes in every room and when time was up the sisters would start to sing again to signal it was time to leave.
When we had met five out of ten of the chapters we took a break for dinner, which was Mo’s tonight! And it was buffet style! While we were eating there was a short presentation given about the benefits of joining a sorority.
After dinner we regrouped and visited the remaining five sororities. Once we had visited them all we met back in one big room with everyone and it was time to rank our preferences. So basically, we rank eight of the sororities as “number one,” saying that we would accept an invitation from them if they invited us to return and we ranked the other two as “number two and number three,” saying we would not accept their invitations. NC State does this process with an app, but some people also did it on paper. The sororities had ten minutes to chat with each other after every round and decide their rankings for the girls. They are only allowed to invite a certain number of girls back so if you do not make the cut based on their ranking, then you are not invited back. If you are invited back by all the sororities you chose to accept an invitation from, then you will visit eight houses on the second day. However, it is not uncommon to only be invited back by five or six.
After we had ranked them, we got back on the buses and headed back to campus! We do not know until the morning of day two what or how many invitations we received!
